Overstockjeweler.com Golden Globe picks!

We’ve all been updated on the nominee’s but we haven’t discussed who we think is going to win! Here are our top picks of our favorite categories!!!

Let’s start with TV land first. . .

Best Dramatic TV series:

-I predict and HOPE “Heroes” wins for best TV show because it IS the BEST TV show. I am SO addicted to “Heroes”, I love it! I really hope it wins! No other TV show compares to it, it’s the best TV show I have ever seen!

Best Actor in a Dramatic Series:

-Michael C. Hall. I love “Dexter” the TV show and I love “Dexter” the books. Michael’s character Dexter is the polar opposite of his character on “Six Feet Under”. He is such a great actor and not too bad to look at either! The show is a newbie, so I’m not sure if he’ll win. But if he does, more people will actually watch the show!

Best Actress in a Comedy:

-Three way tie. I can’t choose. I love both Felicity Huffman and Mary-Louise Parker. But Felicity won an Emmy last year & Mary-Louise won this Golden Globe last year! When it comes to full on comedic acting, I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus fits the bill. She already won the Emmy this year; I think she has finally broken the “Seinfeld curse”.

Best Actor in a Comedy:

-I hope this year is Zach Braff’s year. This is his third time being nominated, having never won before. He lost to fellow nominee Steve Carell in “The Office” last year and to Tony Shalhoub in “Monk” the year before. Shalhoub has already won three Emmy’s and one Golden Globe for Best Actor. This just might be “Scrubs” last season and I think Zach deserves to go out with a bang!

Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Movie:

-MASI OKA!!! He plays Hiro on “Heroes”! I think his character is a pivotal part of the show. He lightens up the mood of the entire show. Not only does he speak in both English and Japanese on “Heroes,” he does his own translations!! You would think NBC can afford a translator!

OVERSTOCKJEWELER.COM’S FILM PICKS:

Best Dramatic Film:

-I want “Babel” to win best film but I’m not convinced it’s going to win. I have a feeling “Bobby” might win, just because it’s loaded with stars. It was a great film, but if anything, “Babel” will win the Oscar. It’s an instant classic film.

Best Actress in a Drama:

-Helen Mirren for “The Queen”. This is her year, she is finally getting the recognition she deserves. I first fell in love with her in “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover” & then again in “The Madness of King George”. There is no question she isn’t going to win for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth the II.

Best Actor in a Drama:

-Forest Whitaker. His performance was unbelievable in this movie. He completely transformed himself into a completely different person for this role and that is what it takes to have a powerful performance. Not only did he have a very realistic accent in the film, he learned Swahili! He deserves this award, hands down.

Best Musical or Comedy Film: “Borat” was the funniest film by far but there is no way it’s taking home a Golden Globe! I want “The Devil Wears Prada” to win, but I’m pretty sure “Dreamgirls” is going to take this one home. Coin toss on this one.

Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy:

-Meryl Streep for the “Devil Wears Prada”. No need to justify this one ;)

Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy:

-Will Ferrell for “Stranger Than Fiction”! I just loved him in this film. He is a comic genius and the simple fact that he was even nominated is a confirmation that he is a very influential talent in the industry. He definitely deserves this award!

Best Supporting Actress in a Film:

-Though I loved Jennifer Hudson’s performance Rinko Kikuchi in “Babel” was amazing. Some of her scenes were some of my favorite parts of the movie, and her performance made it so. Though, I’m pretty sure, after all of the controversy, Jennifer Hudson is going to win. I just can’t wait till the ceremony airs!

Best Supporting Actor in a Film:

-Our pick is Brad Pitt for his performance in “Babel” But we’re just not sure if he is actually going to take it home. His only real competition is Eddie Murphy for “Dreamgirls” and Ben Affleck in “Hollywoodland” Jack Nicholson & Mark Wahlberg did not have award worthy performances in “The Departed”. But the politics rule this award show…

Best Screenplay: “The Queen”. This script tells the dark story behind England’s Royal Family and all of the controversy behind how they reacted to the passing of Princess Diana. It’s a very intriguing movie and it’s all factual. I loved this movie. It’s already won awards for best screenplay all around the world, can’t imagine why it would stop here.

Best Foreign Language Film:

-“Volver” from Spain. Pedro Almodovar is one of my favorite directors ever. This film brought him into the mainstream, as much as I have ever seen. I loved this film, and Penelope Cruz’s performance was astonishing. I’m very proud of both of them.

Now, onto the other gossip that we haven’t gotten to yet…. It seems as if there was the same amount of drama behind the camera as there was on-camera during the making of the film “Babel”. The screenwriter, Guillermo Arriaga, and director, Alejandro Gonzalez, have severed both their professional and personal relationship since wrapping the film. Both have worked on several films together, and the screenwriter is expressing that both men have had an equal amount of influence on every film they’ve collaborated on. It seems as if the director is trying to take all of the credit for all of their films. He even went as far as banning the screenwriter from attending their premiere at the Cannes film festival. Now, I believe the screenwriter is just as important as the director, IF the writer was involved through out the process, and in this case, both seem to have been equal partners. I can’t wait to see how the men behave at the ceremony next week! (Source: Wikipedia>

There is one more thing I’d like to bring up regarding the nominations for the 2007 Golden Globes. “The Departed” starring Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Mark Whalberg, has been nominated for many awards this year. But Matt Damon was the only man out of those four A-listers, who did not receive a nod this year and that is laughable. Matt Damon MADE this film! His character was the driving force of the film, and was actually incredibly impressive to boot. I think that it’s ridiculous that Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for “The Departed” AND “Blood Diamond”! He was great in “Blood Diamond,” but he shouldn’t have received the nomination over Matt’s performance in “The Departed”. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how everything unfolds next week!

In the mean time check out these beautiful stars from various 2006 ceremonies and premieres.

“Dreamgirls” 2007 Golden Globes Controversy…

Now that we are all caught up on who received Golden Globe nominations for 2007, it’s time to discuss the controversies and try to predict who is going to win!! First let’s talk about the biggest drama about this year’s nominations:

Dreamgirls Banner

“Dreamgirls”, starring Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Beyonce Knowles, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Jones, Keith Robison & introducing Jennifer Hudson received a total of five Golden Globe nominations by the Foreign National Press Association:

-Best Musical or Comedy motion picture
-Best Lead Actress (in a musical or comedy) - Beyonce Knowles
-Best Supporting Actress in a film- Jennifer Hudson
-Best supporting actor in a film- Eddie Murphy
-Best original song- “Listen” sung by Beyonce Knowles

The biggest controversy behind the “Dreamgirls” nominations has to do with Beyonce Knowles & Jennifer Hudson. Both were nominated for Golden Globes and congrats to them for that! But the problem lies in the catagories they were nominated for. Beyonce was given a best lead actress in a film nomination & Jennifer Hudson was given a best supporting actress in a film nomination. Now, why in the world were they split up into two different categories, when both roles were VERY similar in size and “importance”?! If anything, Jennifer Hudson’s character is BIGGER than Beyonce’s role, Deena!!! She had, in the film version, I think two or three more solo songs & scene’s than Beyonce. So how is it possible that Beyonce was given a Best LEAD actress nod, & Jen Hudson was given a supporting nod?!?!

I understand that Beyonce is a huge mega-star & this is Jennifer Hudson’s first film & biggest showcase of talent since she was first introduced to us in the American Idol competition, season 3! But just because Beyonce is a bigger STAR does not make her ROLE any more important than Jennifer’s!!!! It’s like saying, I’m going to put Meryl Streep in a cameo appearance, with four lines, but just because she is the Goddess of acting, she’s going to get a best LEAD nomination!! NO, she would get a best supporting role nomination, just like she has in the past…

I have nothing against Beyonce, I think she is one of the most powerful performers out there right now. She is such a force when she sings, period. But the reason why this is such a big deal to me and to so many others has to do with the history of “Dreamgirls,” the musical. Some of you may not know, but the film is based on a very successful show that ran for years in the 80’s on Broadway. The Broadway production won a total of 6 Tony’s, (the equivalent to the Oscars but for theatre). It won best book of a musical, best lead actor, best lead actress, best featured actor (supporting), best lighting & best choreography.

Here is where the drama lies. The two women who played the roles of Effie White & Deena Jones were both nominated for BEST LEAD in a musical. And the woman who took home the award, was the actress who played Effie White, the role Jennifer Hudson played in the film version. Now, one performance doesn’t really have to do with the other, but, the fact that it was “Best Lead” should be a sign of some sort of political strings that were pulled for this year’s upcoming Golden Globes.

I heard somewhere, not sure where, that it was the movie execs who chose to market the actresses like this. They felt that Jennifer Hudson had more of a chance to win in the supporting category than the lead category, which is smart, I guess, but then, why not Beyonce in the same category?! I never knew movie producers had such an influence on the Foreign National Press, the one’s who choose who gets nominated and who wins. Also, in my personal opinion, I think Jamie Foxx, also deserved a nomination too!!! HE was GREAT in this film, as was Eddie Murphy!!

So, what do you guys think?!?! I’m shocked by this. I’m sure Jen Hudson is excited about her nomination, but the fact that Beyonce was given a best lead nomination just doesn’t make any sense!! It’s like the movie all over again!! The sad, yet true marketing ploys interfering with the actual talent of the performers. As they say, life imitating art, imitating life…

What do you guys think?! Even if you completely disagree with me, I’d love to discuss this! Let me know!!
